‘At Last Fighting is Over’: The end of the First World War on the Front and in Cheltenham In 1920 Cheltenham Borough Council commissioned Fred Roe to paint a war memorial picture. It portrayed six officers from the 1st Battalion of the 5th Gloucestershire Regiment, the first soldiers to leave Cheltenham the day after war was declared.
